On this map: Center Hall is building number 28 (C5). Copies of Handouts: There will be no paper copies of handouts. All handouts can be obtained from this web site. If you are unable to access this web site or print out the handouts, please see the appropriate UCSD administrator to take care of the problem. Discussion Classes: The discussion classes will be led by a TA, who will present clarifications of lecture material and will work out in detail specific examples of important problems. In contrast, regular class lectures will be more theoretically oriented, often with fewer or no examples. The office hours are where you can ask for help on specific homework problems you are having trouble with.
Midterm: Thursday February 16, 2012, 11:00am-12:20pm, CENTER HALL Room 109 (the usual class room)
Copies of old midterm exams are posted. Final Exam: Thursday, March 22, 2012, 11:30am-2:30pm, Location Center Hall 113 (same as usual lecture room)
Grading: Your final grade will count Homework 0%, the midterm exam 40%, and the final exam 60%. However, you have the option of not taking the midterm exam (or taking it but not handing it in), in which case the final exam will be 100% of your grade. If you hand in the midterm, it will count 40% of your grade. Exams are Open Book Both the Midterm and Final Exam will be Open Book and Open Notes. You may bring all the paper material you want as long as you can carry it. No calculators, computers, cell phones, PDAs, or any other electronic devices of any sort will be permitted. Mechanical slide rules and abacuses are allowed :) This class does not stress memorizing formulas, but rather understanding how to solve problems in probability from basic principles. Missed Midterm Exam Policy: No makeup midterm exams will be given. However, you may choose to not take the midterm exam, not hand in the midterm exam, get sick for the midterm exam, sleep late during the midterm exam, etc. If you do not hand in a midterm exam FOR ANY REASON (even emergencies), your Final Exam will count as 100% of your grade instead of 60%. The Final Exam will cover all the material in the course. Exam Regrading Policy: If you would like a portion of an exam regraded because you think you deserve more points or the points were added wrong, please submit your graded exam and a brief WRITTEN description on a separate piece of paper of precisely what you think is wrong. Do not write anything on the original exam. You can submit this material to the TA but please make sure it is personally handed to him. Exams extending beyond the "Normal" Time (a.k.a. "regular" time or "standard" time): The Midterm Exam will be designed as a 40 minute exam. However, if anyone for any reason wants more time we will guarantee twice as much as the normal time (i.e. 80 minutes). The Final Exam will be designed as a 1.5 hour exam. However, if anyone for any reason wants more time we will guarantee twice as much as the normal time (i.e. 3 hours total). Homework: Homeworks are not to be handed in and will not be graded. You are however encouraged to work them out and check the posted solutions. You can also ask the TA for help on the homeworks, as they are good practice for exams for example. Calculators: Calculators will not be needed in this class and will not be allowed on exams. This class is about thinking and understanding ideas, not about grinding out decimal answers to numerical problems. Text: A First Course in Probability, 8th Edition, by Sheldon Ross, Prentice-Hall, 2001 (ISBN-10: 013603313).
Note: The older 5th or 6th or 7th editions of this text will be fine for this class, so you may be able to save money that way.
Academic Integrity: In a continuing effort to protect the integrity of the classroom, and in particular the honest completion of examinations, the professor or others under his authority may take photos of class members while those members are engaged in academic work.
